Addiction has both psychological and physical factors to consider, and both should be managed during treatment to foster a recovery with fewer and less significant relapses.
Addiction involves both psychological and physical factors, and treatment needs to manage both if the goal is a recovery with fewer, less severe relapses.
Detox mostly addresses the physical side of addiction, but preventing relapse means dealing with the emotional and behavioural side too. We rely heavily on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) here — research published in Psychiatric Clinics of North America has shown CBT methods can meaningfully improve abstinence rates. We pair this with behavioural therapy that helps clients become more self-reliant and better equipped to handle stressful situations as they arise. CBT looks closely at how a person's thoughts connect to their actions, and gives us ways to reshape negative thought patterns to change behaviour for the better.
Stress is one of the most common relapse triggers, so we teach clients practical ways to cope with both external and internal stressors through CBT — a skill that can help avoid a potential relapse before it happens. Research published in Psychiatric Times has even suggested CBT may help improve a person's neurobiological circuitry. Depression, anxiety, and mood swings are common during addiction and withdrawal, and CBT gives clients real strategies to manage and smooth out these symptoms.
Our first treatment goal is physical stability — safely removing drugs or alcohol from a person's body and brain while minimizing withdrawal side effects. Since detox is primarily about the physical side of addiction, we offer medication-assisted detox to ease withdrawal symptoms and give patients the strongest possible start, using the latest evidence-based resources to keep the process as safe, comfortable, and effective as possible.
